This month’s trip takes us to Nelson’s largest inland town, Murchison, famous for its gold mining past. Many of its buildings still retain their original charming appearances from the late 1800s and early 1900s. We will visit the Murchison Museum where knowledgeable staff have amassed a collection of memorabilia, photographs, and written accounts by locals of the 1929 Murchison Earthquake and 1968 Inangahua Earthquake. A building adjacent to the museum houses centuries-old machinery used for gold mining, sawmilling, and agriculture.
